Evansville, Ind.- The UW-Parkside Softball team had a bout of shaky defense on Saturday and paid for it with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Southern Indiana. The Rangers dropped game one, 8-0, before falling in the nightcap, 4-3. Parkside committed eight errors on the day in falling to 9-19 on the season and 5-5 in the GLVC.

The Rangers' defense played a major role in the game one loss as Southern Indiana was able to score four unearned runs thanks to six Parkside errors. USI scored a couple runs in the first, one more in the third, and then put the game away with three runs in the fifth on three errors and no hits. They added two more in the sixth to finish the game via the mercy rule.

The offense had chances putting nine runners on base but went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Kristin Kleinmeyer was saddled with the loss, allowing four earned runs in falling to 2-6.

Game two started similar to the way the opener ended with the Screaming Eagles scoring four unearned runs against starter Jill Vondrak in the first inning.

The Rangers came back in the second to cut the lead the thanks to some shoddy defense from USI. Lani Grogan and Diana Gordon led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Grogan came into score on a misplayed but, with Gordon thrown out at third, but Parkside was on the board. Christine Holthus drove in run number two with an RBI-groundout after another error and it was 4-2. The scoring continued when Nicki Ekstrom struck out but reached on a passed ball, allowing Lexi Sotiros to score another run.

Unfortunately that was the end of the scoring on the day. The Rangers moved the tying run to third on two different occasions but couldn't push her across.

Vondrak took the loss giving up six hits and walking five. None of her four runs allowed were earned. Ekstrom led the offense with two hits.

The Rangers weekend continues on Sunday as they travel to St. Louis to take on USML. The Tritons sit in fourth place after suffering a sweep at the hands of Lewis on Saturday.
