Highland Heights, Ky.- The UW-Parkside baseball team's hopes of grabbing one of the final spots in the GLVC Tournament took a hit on Friday as the Rangers were swept by Northern Kentucky University in a doubleheader. The Norse outhit the Rangers 28-11 on the day and recorded 12-0 and 9-5 wins.
The losses dropped the Rangers to 9-15 in GLVC play and four games back of Northern Kentucky and Saint Joseph's who are currently tied for the eighth and final tournament spot. Parkside has eight conference games currently left on the schedule.
It was all Northern Kentucky in the opener as the Norse scored in all six innings they had the opportunity to bat. They pounded out 18 hits in the game including four by Brian Erie.
The Rangers were held to singles by
Brad Liermann and
John Perszyk. They put just one runner in scoring position.
Game two started out the way game one ended before the Rangers got their bats going. NKU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings to take control.
The Rangers got on the board with four runs in the fifth and gave themselves a chance to steal a win.
Kirk Haviland and
Brad Liermann combined for the day's first run with back-to-back doubles.
John Brennan got himself an RBI with a hit to score Liermann.
Mike Anderson followed with a two-run blast and the lead was trimmed to 7-4.
The Norse got two runs in the sixth which proved to be vital as Parkside mounted a seventh-inning rally.
Three straight hits by
Taylor Schwarz, Brennan, and Anderson brought in a run and made it 9-5. Two batters later,
Corey Stonelake drew a walk to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. But Brent Wethington got
Dave Lojeski to fly out and Haviland to pop out to end the game.
Brennan, Anderson, and Persyzk each collected two hits in contest with Anderson driving in three runs and scoring another. Brennan had a run scored and an RBI.
The series will continue on Saturday as the Rangers look to grab a couple of wins and get back into the thick of the conference tournament race.
