Softball Sweeps Two From Maryville

Rangers Improve to 4-2 in GLVC Play

Nicki Ekstrom went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI in the opener to help the Rangers to a GLVC-sweep
Somers, Wis.- The UW-Parkside Softball team got its first home wins of the season on Saturday knocking off Maryville University in a GLVC-doubleheader. The Rangers won game one, 3-1 and finished the sweep with a 3-2 win in the finale. UW-Parkside improves to 4-2 in the GLVC while the Saints dropped to 1-6.

Maryville got on the board first in the opener scoring a run in the third. The Rangers waited until the fourth to answer before putting up single runs in three straight innings to take control.

Nicki Eckstrom tied the game with an RBI-single, driving in Krista Kelly, to make it 1-1. Diana Gordon started the sixth with a double and came around with the go-ahead run on a base-hit by Colleen Cummings.

Eckstrom supplied the final insurance run with a sixth-inning triple, plating pinch-runner Natalie Shank, and giving Parkside a 3-1 lead.

Jill Vondrak made it hold up as she threw a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out three. Eckstrom led the offense with two hits and two runs batted in.

In game two the Rangers didn't waste any time as they plated two first inning runs. Christine Holthus singled with one out and promptly stole second base. Kirsten Luevano followed with an RBI-double to stake the Rangers to an early lead. Kelly followed that with a run-scoring single and it was quickly 2-0.

Maryville would square things up, however, in the middle innings. They put up a run in the fourth and then tied the game in the fifth when Beth Ladd knocked a home run.

But Parkside would respond in the fifth to re-take the lead. Lexi Sotiros led off with a single and went all the way to third when a bunt by Cummings was misplayed. Holthus follwed with a sacrifice fly to left, putting the Rangers back out in front, 3-2.

Kristin Kleinmeyer made sure things would stick, finishing what she started in earning her first collegiate victory. She limited the Saints to just four hits, allowing only one earned run and striking out eight.

Luevano and Kelly each supplied two hits. Sotiros was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 and scoring the winning run.

The Rangers are back in action Sunday at the Case Softball Complex. Missouri S&T will be the opponent with first pitch scheduled for noon.
