Rangers Offense Struggles in Home Opener

Jill Vondrak was the tough-luck loser, allowing just one earned run, in Game One vs. Quincy

Kenosha, Wis.- The UW-Parkside Softball team opened their home schedule by dropping a doubleheader to Quincy at Case Softball Complex. The Rangers were no-hit in game one by Torie Bunzell in a 2-1 defeat before falling in game two 5-1.

Bunzell, who threw a perfect game with 17 strikeouts on Wednesday against Culver-Stockton, struck out 16 Rangers in holding the Rangers hitless in the victory.

In game one Quincy grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an unearned run against Jill Vondrak. Parkside answered in the bottom of the inning without a ball leaving the infield as the Rangers benefited from three walks and a hit batter. Diana Gordan drew the bases loaded walk to tie the game.

Quincy pushed across the eventual winning run in the sixth on Carla Passini's third hit of the game, this one a two-single single to deep center. Parkside was unable to threaten against Bunzell the rest of the way.

In game two Quincy jumped out early scoring three in the first and never looked back. They added a run in both the second and third as the Ranger offense was unable to get anything going. Bunzell started again for Quincy and pitched three no-hit innings, striking out seven and walking four. Lauren Francis relieved her in the fourth and closed out the win with four innings where she struck out 11 and allowed just one hit.

Meg McCormick got the Rangers on the board in the sixth with a two-out double to deep center … also recording the Rangers first hit of the day. Francis struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.

The Rangers will return to action Sunday for a doubleheader with Illinois-Springfield. Game one is set for noon at the Case Softball Complex.
