The 18
th-ranked UW-Parkside women's basketball team won its 21
st straight home game with a 75-58 victory over Trinity International on Tuesday evening. The Rangers overcame a sloppy start with a strong second half to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Danielle Slivka provided a big boost off the bench recording her first career double-double. The sophomore from Johnsburg, Ill., had 10 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists to spark the Rangers.
“Danielle played really well today,” said head coach Jenny Knight-Kenesie. “The most exciting thing is how consistent she's been so far. Obviously it's early in the year but she's gaining confidence every game and gave us some huge minutes tonight.”
Brittany Beyer, who missed much of the first half due to foul trouble, had 21 points (15 in the second half) and five boards.
Jadee Rooney added 18 points to go with eight assists.
Amy Selk joined the group in double figures with 13 points to go with her six rebounds.
The Trojans opened their biggest lead of the game at 40-32 with 18:43 left in regulation before Parkside rallied. The Rangers embarked on a 13-1 run to grab its first lead since midway through the first half and never looked back.
“We pushed some buttons at halftime and the kids responded,” said Kenesie. “Getting Beyer back in was a boost offensively and obviously Danielle gave us a lot of energy. I also thought Kaitlyn (Bettiga) and Jadee played much better in the second half defensively and gave us better leadership.
Trinity cut the lead to two on a couple occasions before the Rangers began to pull away thanks to an improved defensive effort. Parkside held the Trojans to just seven points over a 15 minute span to build a 63-47 lead.
The Rangers forced 17 Trinity turnovers and limited them to 32.1% shooting in the second half. Parkside was much more efficient knocking down 61.5% of their shots in the half (49.1% for the game) with just 12 turnovers.
The Trojans went 7-for-9 from the three-point line in the opening half and built a 31-24 lead with 3:36 remaining before settling in with a 34-30 advantage at the break. Trinity shot 56.5% overall from the field in the period while the Rangers were limited to 38.7%.
“In the first half defensively in transitioning we were completely out of it,” said Kenesie. “We weren't communicating, we had our heads turned, and we weren't getting matched up. We are happy that we were able to make adjustments at halftime but we're too experienced for some of those things to happen.”
The Rangers will continue their eight-game home stand after the break with a big regional match-up against Grand Valley State. Saturday's game will tip-off at 1:00 p.m. and if you can't make it to campus we'll have the action live at gatewaysportsweb.org.
