Box Score Brittany Beyer's career-high 37 points led UW-Parkside to a 72-57 victory over Tampa University on Friday evening. It was the second-most point ever scored by a women's basketball player at UW-Parkside. The Rangers, ranked 16th in the country, knocked off home-standing Tampa who came in receiving votes.
Beyer was 15-for-19 from the floor and 7-for-11 from the line as she came up just shy of the school record. Debbie Hanson's 39 points against Chicago State in 1985 remains the top output but the senior from New London made a run as she helped carry the Rangers through their first test of 2011-12.
She had 19 first half points as the teams battled back-and-forth throughout with neither team leading by more than five points the entire period. Parkside needed every one of her 19 points as four players were confined to the bench with two fouls. The Rangers held a slim 33-32 advantage heading to the locker room as both squads shot 50% or better.
Tampa scored the first two points of the half before the Rangers got hot and went on an 11-0 run to open a ten point lead.
Cheryl Leyns scored four straight and Beyer added six as Parkside opened the biggest cushion of the game.
That spurt turned out to be the difference in the game as the Rangers never allowed Tampa to get closer than six the rest of the way. Each time the home team made a run, Parkside was able to answer.
After two Kamari Smith free throws got the lead down to six,
Amy Selk and Beyer came up with back-to-back layups to put it back to double digits. Smith trimmed it down to a half dozen again later in the half but Parkside scored seven straight this time to open the margin back up to 13.
The final margin of 15 turned out to be the biggest as the Rangers closed things out on the first win of the season.
Parkside was 12-for-19 (63.2%) from the floor in the second half and 56.5% overall. They also committed just ten turnovers for the contest while forcing 16.
Amy Selk and
Jadee Rooney also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Rooney completed a double-double with 10 assists.
Parkside also out-rebounded the Spartans 25-20. They were 16-for-21 from the line including 15-for-19 in the second half.
The Rangers will finish their Florida trip with another difficult match-up on Saturday. They'll take on Rollins College at 1:30 p.m. Rollins held a double-digit lead Friday before falling to Clayton State University, the defending DIvision II National Champions.
