Quincy Box Score
Cardinal Stritch Box Score
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team improved to 7-1 at home scoring a pair of wins Saturday evening at the DeSimone Gymnasium. The Rangers open the night with a GLVC victory over Quincy University (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) before surviving a non-conference match with Cardinal Stritch (19-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 15-10). The Rangers are now 7-3 in the GLVC and 9-8 overall.
Quincy
Parkside got off to a good start in game one against the Hawks. After a back-and-forth start the Rangers went on a six-point run to take an 18-9 lead.
Shannon Curtis was directly responsible for over half of those points with four service aces. They finished the set with a block by
Caroline Langer and
Adrienne Uthe for the 25-16 win.
Game two was tight in the early going with the teams knotted at 13 before Parkside began to pull away. A 7-2 run stretched the lead as
Bridget Nickel hammered one down to make it 20-15.
The Hawks made a run of their own to get within one before Parkside scored the final three points to earn the set. Two kills by
Addie Kramer and a final one by Nickel secured the 25-21 victory.
The final set had a similar script as Parkside held a tenuous lead for much of the stanza. And ace by Kramer gave the Rangers their biggest lead at 19-14 but Quincy did not let up. They scored six of the next nine points to trim the lead to 22-21.
Jessi Mainczyk and Kramer had back-to-back kills to make it 24-21. The Hawks responded with two straight points to get to 24-23 before Mainczyk finished the match with a kill to preserve the conference win.
“I thought we played very well,” said head coach
Christine Paciero. “I thought they were sharp.
Cayla Flood played well and our serve receive was good. It was a good match.”
Kramer led the way with 12 kills and 10 digs. Nickel had 10 kills of her own and Curtis led the defense with 11 digs.
Cardinal Stritch
The Rangers came out a bit flat in the second match of the night and the Wolves pounced. They took the lead early on and built it up to as many as seven before finishing it off. Anna Flock's service ace gave Cardinal Stritch the first set at 25-19.
The second set was close throughout but once again the Wolves kept the Rangers at bay. Other than an early 2-1 lead, Parkside was unable to get over the hump to take the lead. Kills by Kramer and Uthe tied the match at 22 and 24 but Stritch wouldn't let the game get away. A block by Alyssa Ahmad and Gabrielle Bobinsky, followed by a kill by Ashley Wipperfurth, gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead in the match.
Cardinal Stritch took an early four point lead in the third set in search of the sweep. The Rangers finally showed some life scoring six straight points to seize momentum. Two aces by Langer, two kills by Marx, and one by Kramer keyed the rally. The Wolves were able to get within a point late but Kramer killed the game winner to get Parkside back into the match.
The fourth set was once again up for grabs halfway through as the teams battled to a 15-15 tie. From there it was Parkside who took over scoring ten of the final 15 points to force the decisive fifth set. They used three blocks and a pair of kills from Kramer, including the final swing, to win it 25-20.
Parkside then completed the comeback scoring six of the final seven points to earn the rubber game, 15-10. Langer, Marx, and Kramer had consecutive kills in front of a Cardinal Stritch ball-handling error to end the match.
Marx finished with a season-high, 17 kills. Kramer added 16 leaving her 13 shy of 1,000 in her career. Langer ended with a double-double notching 16 kills and 15 digs.
“We worked really hard on defense those last three sets,” said Paciero. “They tried harder and it just got harder. We just needed to relax and concentrate on defense and we did that. It was kind of a gut check and I was happy we responded.”
The Rangers will now finish up the weekend with a match Sunday against Illinois Springfield. That match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
