Rangers Drop Second Straight to Ranked Team

Caroline Langer led Parkside with nine kills on Wednesday night
Box Score

The UW-Parkside volleyball team was unable to clinch a GLVC Tournament slot on Tuesday night as the Rangers were swept by 20th-ranked Lewis University (25-23, 25-23, 25-17). Parkside took Lewis to the brink in the first two sets but the red-hot Flyers were able to hold them off to win their seventh straight match. The Rangers are now 9-5 in GLVC play and 13-13 overall.

Caroline Langer had nine kills and Cassy Marx added seven. Stacie Bower tied for a match-high with 14 digs. The team was limited to a .118 hitting percentage on the night.

Lewis held a comfortable lead for much of the first set before the Rangers scored four straight points to cut the deficit to 23-21. Marx, Bridget Nickel, and Adrienne Uthe had kills in the run to trim the lead. After a UWP service error they scored two more, including a kill from Langer, to make it 24-23. But Lewis came up with a block on the next point to end the game.

Once again Parkside was forced to rally in the second set and nearly pulled off the comeback. Trailing 22-18 they put together four straight points as Nickel contributed a kill and two aces. Unfortunately the Rangers then committed two straight attack errors and Kim Vertin was able to finish the set with a kill to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead.

The third was all Lewis as they went on a six point run early in the set to open up a cushion. Parkside got no closer than five the rest of the night as the Flyers completed the sweep.

The Rangers will hit the road again this weekend to complete their five game stretch of away matches. Parkside will next take to the court Friday night in Evansville, Ind., against the University of Southern Indiana. The Screaming Eagles have won four straight and are currently tied for first in the GLVC Eastern Division.
