The UW-Parkside men's soccer team was strong once again defensively but couldn't find the net in a 1-0 loss to Rockhurst University on Sunday at Wood Road Field. The Hawks used a penalty kick goal in the 65th minute by Mark Magee to help vault themselves into second place in the GLVC with a 9-2-1 conference record. The Rangers dropped to 6-7-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the league with the loss.
"There's nothing to say that we haven't already," said head coach
Jason Zitzke. "Today was just another example of how your margin of error is razor thin. We haven't gotten the job done like we expect to."
Parkside controlled possession in the game's opening minutes but was unable to create a great scoring chance. The Hawks did create one shortly after on their first attack in a bizarre scramble around the net.
After a save in front the ball was loose with lots of traffic around the goal line. A Parkside player went to the ground and when he tried to get up the ball was wedged between his feet. The official awarded an indirect free kick from about five yards away but the Ranger wall in front was able to keep the shot from going in the net and the match remained tied.
From there the Rangers were able to limit Rockhurst's scoring opportunities for the rest of the half. They were able to create one of their own.
Spencer Bursten laid a nice centering pass to
Jorge Ontiveros but his shot went just high and it was scoreless going to the half.
Just moments after Adriana Magana made a great save for the Ranger defense, a whistle in the box led to the match's only goal. Parkside was called for a handball in the penalty box which Magee converted for the 1-0 lead.
The Rangers looked to have a chance late with a free kick in Rockhurst territory but were unable to convert. A final run by
Carlos Contreras to
Niklas Boedts was turned away and the Hawks held on for the win.
Parkside will now head to Drury to start a three game road trip to finish the regular season. Friday night's match at Drury will begin at 7:30 p.m.
