Rangers Suffer Another Tough Defeat

The Ranges were unable to get past the Cardinals onFriday
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer team suffered a second consecutive gut-wrenching loss in overtime on Friday afternoon at Wood Road Field. William Jewell College scored a goal three minutes and 52 seconds into the second overtime and earned a 1-0 win over the Rangers. Parkside lost in similar fashion last Sunday against Southern Indiana and has been shut out in all six of its losses.

“We need to learn how to win,” said head coach Jason Zitzke. “This conference is very unforgiving. It's so competitive and so deep. We've also got to understand that nothing is going to be given to us … we've got to go take it. We're close but we're just not finishing things off.”

William Jewell seemed to control possession in the first half as the teams met for the first time as conference opponents. They also created the first great chance of the match when they chipped the ball in over the top and Nick Huftalin was called for a foul in the box to give the Cardinals a penalty kick.

But Huftalin answered the call as he stoned the PK off the foot off Cole Prather to keep the game scoreless. Huftalin lunged to his right to slap away shot and dodge a bullet for Parkside.

The Cardinals nearly scored again with about 10 minutes to go in the half when Forrest McCurren got one by Huftalin. But this time a Rangers defender sprinted in from the weak side to boot the ball away.

William Jewell had 9-4 advantage in shots in the opening half while finishing with a 23-16 cushion overall. They also created 15 corner kicks compared to seven for the Rangers.

Parkside was able to even things out in the second half. Kinkade Lo launched a 40-yarder midway through the period and nearly gave the Rangers the lead as the ball was punched over the cross bar.

With time running down the Cardinals nearly stole the win. Chad Newman got a good look at a header with just over two minutes to go, but again, the Ranger defense where there on the far post to head the ball away from trouble and help send the game to extra time.

Parkside had their best opportunity early in the second overtime when Niklas Boedts led a run with Jorge Ontiveros. Boedts sent a touch to the left side but Ontiveros shot was saved and the game continued.

Less than a minute later it was over when Troy Green came in unmarked on the right side and received a cross from McCurren. Green tapped it in for his 11th goal of the year to give William Jewell their seventh GLVC win of the season.

“No excuses,” said Zitzke. “We have high expectations and we're not meeting those right now. We're doing 99% of things right but it's that one percent we're not getting done. Until we do that last one percent we're going to be disappointed.”

Parkside will wrap up the home schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. match against Rockhurst University. It will be the final home match for five Ranger seniors.
