The Bellarmine men's basketball team came into the day ranked No. 1 in the nation. When the new poll came out in mid-afternoon, the team found itself ranked No. 4. The Knights proved why they are among the nation's elite with an 82-54 victory at UW-Parkside Tuesday night.
The Rangers hung tough early, connecting on their first five field goal attempts, two of which were three-pointers. The Knights took the lead for good at the 8:30 mark of the first half when it eclipsed the Rangers at 20-18.
Bellarmine went into the lockerroom holding a 38-30 advantage. The visitors blew the game open in the second half, out-scoring their hosts 44-24.
Parkside was led in the scoring column by Jeremy Saffold, who logged 14 points. Leneal Harris added a dozen points.
Bellarmine blistered the nets by shooting 64 percent in the second half and 60 percent for the game. UW-Parkside was limited to 32 percent shooting. The Knights also owned the glass, out-rebounding the Rangers, 41-22.
Bellarmine ups its overall record to 11-1. The team is a perfect 4-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UW-Parkside slipped to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Rangers will go at it again when they host Saint Joseph's College in a GLVC match up Thursday, Jan. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
