The UW-Parkside women's basketball team fell to 10-3 in conference play and 16-5 overall after a 72-66 loss at Southern Indiana Saturday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles jumped to 12-8 overall and have a share of the Eastern Division lead with Northern Kentucky at 8-4.
The Rangers started the game very slowly as Southern Indiana jumped out to an early 17-4 lead. But that wasn't Southern Indiana's only big run of the half, up 23-12, they went on a 13-0 run to take a commanding 36-12 lead. The Rangers were able to make slight in-roads into that lead as they went into halftime trailing, 43-25.
A total of 24 points separated the teams at its largest margin, the last of which was at 41-27, but, the second half saw the Rangers display a furious comeback.
With just over 12 minutes to play, the Rangers trailed 55-37. Over the next 7 minutes, the Rangers went on a 20-6 tear to cut the lead to 61-57 with just under 5 minutes to play. And with 45 seconds to play, Brittany Beyer hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 67-64.
The Ranger rally whittled a 24-point lead down to three, but the Screaming Eagles held of the visitors with free throws. Southern Indiana went 5-6 from the free throw line down the stretch, which was enough to escape with the victory. The Eagles made their first 20 free throws and ended up 20-21 at the stripe.
Amy Selk lead the Rangers with 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. She also scored 11 of the 20 points during the aforementioned 20-4 run that got the Rangers back in the game. Brittany Beyer scored 13 points and Jadee Rooney added seven and also joined the 1,000 point club for her career.
Rooney, a junior, is now the 15th player in UW-Parkside women's basketball history to score 1,000 points. She joins Beyer and Brittany Hogen, who joined the group earlier this season. Rooney became the school's career leader in three-pointers made this year.
The Rangers head back home to face Lewis University on Thursday February 3, with a 5:30 p.m. tip.
