The UW-Parkside men's soccer team suffered a tough setback Sunday afternoon against Southern Indiana in Evansville. The Rangers battled hard in the second half only to fall short 2-1 to hosts Southern Indiana. The loss brings Parkside's record to 4-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the GLVC. Southern Indiana improved to 4-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the GLVC.
The Rangers and the Screaming Eagles played a very evenly matched first half. Parkside slightly outshot the Screaming Eagles and had more corner kick opportunities, but failed to score. Southern Indiana was able to capitalize when Simon Rawnsley scored at 35:39 from an assist by Nolan Horvath.
The Rangers entered half time down 1-0.
The second half looked to be very opportunistic for the Rangers as they dominated play. However, once again Southern Indiana was the team that was able to take advantage of the few chances they had. At 66:27, Austin Andrekus was able to find the net after being set up by Simon Rawnsley. The Rangers continued to dominate Southern Indiana as they fired 11 total shots in the half. Finally, senior Matt Gloshen was able to score at 72:44 to cut the lead to 2-1. Unfortunately, the Ranger effort ran out of time as Southern Indiana defeated Parkside 2-1.
Statistically, the Rangers dominated play finishing with 17 shots in comparison to only 9 shots from Southern Indiana. Parkside had 7 corner kicks while USI finished with 3.
“We had the ball inside their six (yard line) at least 10 times and we just couldn't put the ball in the goal,” Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke. “We couldn't finish.”
The Rangers will look to return to their winning ways Friday, September 24th at home against Northern Kentucky. The game is scheduled for a 1:15 p.m. start.
