Saginaw Valley State set a school record for wins (14) last season and made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Cardinals picked up where they left off last year, handing UW-Parkside a rare home loss with a 1-0 decision.
The non-conference match at Wood Road Field Thursday afternoon was the season opener for both clubs.
“They capitalized on a mistake we made,” said UW-Parkside head coach Troy Fabiano.
That mistake occurred 17:54 into the contest. Cardinal Megan Morad scored unassisted. That turned out to be the only score of the game.
Parkside had six shots on goal and 19 total attempts. Saginaw Valley State had seven shot attempts, putting five on net.
“You could tell it was both team's first game,” said Fabiano. “We created chances, but just didn't finish them off.”
The Rangers will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play in Rolla, Missouri, on Sunday when they tangle with host Missouri S&T. You can follow along via live stats by going to: www.sidearmstats.com/mst/wsoc
