KENOSHA, Wis. — The Parkside women's soccer team heads to Allendale, Michigan, on Friday, Nov. 6, to face Ferris State in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals, with both programs coming off road upsets in Tuesday's quarterfinals. The match will take place at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT.
The fifth-seeded Rangers advanced with a 3-2 victory over fourth-seeded Davenport, while the eighth-seeded Bulldogs knocked off top-seeded Wayne State 1-0 in Detroit. Grand Valley State, the highest remaining seed, will host the semifinals and championship match at GVSU Soccer Field.
Parkside enters Friday at 9-6-4 overall and is making its second consecutive semifinal appearance and third in the last four seasons. The Rangers are seeking their second trip to the GLIAC championship match and first since 2023.
Tuesday's victory came behind a burst of three goals in just 4:37 during the first half. Kayden Schmidt opened the scoring at 15:12, Rilyn Breinholt doubled the lead at 17:57, and Kate Brown made it 3-0 at 19:49. Lindsay Dahlinger and Emma Ambrose each recorded an assist.
Davenport answered with a goal late in the first half and another in the 75th minute, but Parkside held on to secure its fourth GLIAC Tournament victory. The Rangers finished with a 16-11 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
Parkside has recorded at least eight shots on goal in four consecutive matches and ranks third in the GLIAC with 289 total shots. Tuesday marked the Rangers' first multiple-goal performance since their regular-season victory over Ferris State on Oct. 4. Parkside is 6-0 this season when scoring at least 2 goals.
Ava Rizzitano leads the Rangers with eight goals and 18 points. She ranks first in the conference in shots per game at 4.29 and shots on goal per game at 2.00. Brown has three goals and seven assists for 13 points, with her assist total tied for third in the GLIAC.
Schmidt has added five goals and is tied for the conference lead with three game-winning goals. Breinholt and Mary Leininger have scored 4 goals apiece. In goal, Lindsey Ferrara has recorded 61 saves, six shutouts, and a 1.05 goals-against average.
SCOUTING FERRIS STATE:
Ferris State enters the semifinals at 7-7-5 overall after eliminating the regular-season champion just 3 days after drawing Wayne State 2-2 at the same site. Haley Buckman scored the quarterfinal's only goal in the 28th minute off an assist from Ava Roy. Korinne Ihrke made two saves in net as the Bulldogs limited Wayne State to six shots and two on goal.
Defense has been central to Ferris State's success. All seven Bulldog victories this season have been shutouts, and Ihrke leads GLIAC goalkeepers with nine clean sheets. Ferris State has allowed 18 goals in 19 matches, the third-fewest in the conference, and has posted three shutouts in its last five outings.
Buckman leads the Bulldogs with seven goals and 16 points despite starting just one match this season. Katherine Welch has contributed five goals and two assists, while Natalia Leavens has scored four goals. The trio has accounted for 16 of Ferris State's 24 goals.
Friday will be the programs' first-ever postseason meeting. Parkside won their only regular-season matchup 2-1 in Big Rapids, earning its second victory at Ferris State in program history.
Rizzitano scored just 3:20 into that match before Buckman equalized on a first-half penalty kick. Schmidt delivered the winner from the penalty spot at 87:31, with just 2:29 remaining. Ferrara made five saves as the Rangers prevailed despite being outshot 18-9.
Parkside's previous championship appearance came in 2023, when the sixth-seeded Rangers defeated third-seeded Michigan Tech 2-1 and second-seeded Grand Valley State 1-0 before falling 1-0 to Northern Michigan in Marquette. Last season, Parkside defeated Purdue Northwest in the quarterfinals before falling to Saginaw Valley State in the semifinals.
Ferris State is making its 19th GLIAC Tournament appearance and returns to the semifinals for the first time since 2023. The Bulldogs have reached the championship match twice, finishing as runners-up in 2018 before winning their first tournament title with a 1-0 victory over Grand Valley State in Allendale in 2021.
Friday's winner will advance to the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 8, against either second-seeded Grand Valley State or third-seeded Saginaw Valley State.
