Second half fire paces Parkside

Box Score

The UW-Parkside men's soccer team broke open a 0-0 deadlock to seize a 3-1 victory over visiting Maryville at a sun splashed Wood Road Field Sunday afternoon. The Great Lakes Valley Conference victory evens the Ranger record at 1-1-1 in league play. Parkside is 3-1-1 overall.

“After not playing that well on Friday (a 2-0 loss, at home to Missouri-St. Louis), it looked like we were seeing more of the same in the first half today,” said UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke after the game. “I guess you can say I kind of lost it at halftime.”

What exactly did Zitzke convey to the Rangers?

“We try to teach and coach hard work, effort and passion which has been part of our winning tradition for many, many years,” said Zitzke, who himself was an All-American for UW-Parkside over a decade ago. “In the second half, our guys came out with a purpose and played with a sense of urgency.”

It didn't take long for the Rangers to break the goose egg in the second set of 45 minutes. Ben Kreple scored his second goal of the season on a mad scramble in front of the net, just 2:35 into the second half. The play was originally set up off of a corner kick.

A dozen minutes later, Ranger Niklas Boedts tallied. Lucas Klees threw the ball in which was deflected by Austin Robb and Boedts did the rest.

Parkside made it 3-zip when Matt Gloshen found the back of the net. The Rangers' final goal was assisted by Carlos Contreras at 61:47.

The Saints avoided the shutout when Erik Roediger scored, unassisted, at 62:42.

“The Traverse City connection of Kreple and Gloshen were on spot in the second half,” cited Zitzke. “Robb and Contreras each stepped up off the bench. It was a nice overall effort in the second half and we need to continue that next weekend because it's always tougher on the road.”

The Rangers will take to the road for their next two matches. The team will be at Kentucky Wesleyan Friday, Sept, 17, prior to heading to Southern Indiana Sunday, Sept. 19. The next home game will be Friday, Sept. 24, versus Northern Kentucky at 1:15 p.m.
