The 2009 UW-Parkside volleyball team logged its best overall record in 12 years. First year head coach Michele Benoit injected enthusiasm and a new direction to the program, as the squad posted an overall record of 21-12. The team set the tone early. After losing its first match, the Rangers won their next nine.
Tami Gleason broke the school record for total blocks in a season (163) and was a third team all-conference pick. Now a senior, she will be a major factor in the success of the team's quick tempo offense and defense. Junior Addie Kramer was a second team all-league selection in 2009 and is a solid offensive player and blocker. Another key returner is Cassie Wilkens, a senior who led the team in digs last year and is a strong all-around player.
The Rangers open the 2010 season Thursday, Sept. 2, at Northern Michigan. The team will take on the host Wildcats as part of the Wildcat Open. The Rangers will play three additional matches in Houghton, Michigan, during the 3-day tournament.
“The goal is to make the conference tournament,” said Benoit. “With a solid core of experienced returners and a sound group of incoming players, we have the opportunity to make a good showing in the conference.”
The top eight of 15 teams qualify for the league's post-season tournament.
Blocking has been a strong part of the success of the team the past few seasons and is expected to continue. Ball control and defense will also keep the Rangers on track for success. Off the court, the team has dedicated themselves in the off-season to be stronger and better conditioned in preparation for what looks to be a promising season.
Local fans can get their first glimpse at the Rangers when it opens the home season Friday, Sept. 17, at 7:00 p.m. versus St. Joseph's.
