The UW-Parkside softball squad had mixed results when it made the trip to St. Louis to take on GLVC newcomer, Maryville, Wednesday afternoon. The Rangers won the opening game of a doubleheader, 2-0, then fell to the Saints, 4-3, in the nightcap. The team moved up I-55 to take on another GLVC newcomer, Illinois-Springfield, on Thursday. UWP won both ends against the Prairie Stars, 11-0 and 8-4.
AT MARYVILLE
Kallie Walczak shutout the home team in Game 1. The Ranger pitcher tossed a three-hitter, striking out nine and walking three.
Parkside scored both of its runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Ashley Nowdomski ignited the uprising with a one-out single to center field. After the second out,
Stephanie Luska singled to right to put two on.
Christine Holthus drove in both runs with a hit which would turn out to be the game-winner.
Krista Kelly and Luska each had two hits in the six-hit attack.
In the second game, the Rangers took a 3-1 lead into the home half of the seventh inning and could not hold on. All three runs scored after two were out with the final blow being a double to left-center, plating two.
Lanaya Gutowski struck out two and walked one. She gave up eight hits.
Kelly stayed hot with a pair of hits. Holthus also had two knocks.
AT ILLINOIS-SPRINGFIELD
The Rangers hung an eight-spot on the board in the fifth inning in Game 1 at Illinois-Springfield, terminating the contest via slaughter rule. A triple off the bat of
Amy Horn started the fifth inning rally, followed by a single from Kelly and back-to-back doubles by
Lisa Casey and
Alyssa Wilson. Horn came back with a single later in the frame. The Rangers had six of their 11 hits in the fifth inning.
Jessica Bryant was the winning pitcher. She scattered five hits in tossing the shutout. She struck out one and did not walk a batter, lifting her record to 2-3.
The Rangers picked up where they left off in the fourth and final game of the trip, pouncing on the Prairie Stars for two in the first and four in the second. UIS scored all four of its runs in the home half of the third.
Holthus logged the hat trick in hits. Casey and
Meg McCormick had two hits each.
Walczak picked up her second win of the trip and is now 3-4. She started and gave up four earned runs in five innings. A total of 10 of the 15 outs she recorded came via strikeout.
Jill Vondrak pitched two scoreless frames to wrap up the contest.
Parkside is now 13-11 overall and 4-6 in the GLVC. The team will host Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday and Southern Indiana on Sunday. Both twin bills begin at noon. You can follow along on
