After a dozen games away from home, the UW-Parkside softball team opened the home softball season with a doubleheader against visiting Minnesota-Duluth on a cool Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs took both ends of the twinbill, 5-1 and 4-0.
Parkside scored first in the opener, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. Christine Holthus who led off with a walk, eventually scored on a passed ball.
The lead held up until the Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the fourth.
The big blow was a seventh-inning grand slam off the bat of Sarah Kabes, whose shot soared over the right-field fence.
Jessica Bryant worked the first six innings for the Rangers, scattering four hits and giving up one earned run. Jill Vondrak worked the seventh inning and absorbed the loss.
Kristin Danielson held the Rangers to four hits.
In the second game, UMD's Heather Stemper pitched a two-hitter. The Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the second and tacked on three more in the visitor's half of the fourth frame.
Samantha Homa was the losing pitcher, going three-and-a-third innings. She was charged with four earned runs.
Duluth jumps to 11-4 overall, while Parkside slipped to 7-7.
Thursday's games were called off due to cold.
