Ranger men score first win ever at NKU

Box Score

If the Ranger men's basketball team took a step backward in its previous outing against Drury, it took two or more giant steps forward with a 62-61 win at Northern Kentucky Saturday afteroon. The young Rangers, with no suited seniors, did something no UW-Parkside men's basketball team has ever done...win at Northern Kentucky.

The Norse led by seven early in the first half when a fired up UW-Parkside head coach Luke Reigel called a timeout and gave his team an animated "pep talk." From that point forward, the guys in green made a move, taking its first lead since the third minute of the game at the 12:42 mark of the second half.

The Rangers led until the Norse forced a 55-55 deadlock with 1:57 to go in the game. Seconds later, Sam Katula slashed his way to the hole for two and another Parkside lead. From there Jamere Dismukes sealed the deal, making good on five of six free throws in the final 17 seconds.

The Parkside win snapped a six game losing streak. The Rangers are now 7-10 overall, equalling the win total for all of last season. UWP is 2-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Northern Kentucky slipped to 8-8 overall and 1-6 in league play.

"We've had games on the road in the past where we were in the exact same situation and found a way to lose. Today we found a way to win," said Reigel. "This is a great win for us."

Jeremy Saffold led the Rangers in scoring with 17 points. Dismukes had 14 and Grant Johnson added 11.

There is little time for celebration with a home game just two days away. Quincy will bring its unblemished 15-0 record to the DeSimone Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. game Monday night.
