Neither side scored a goal in the first 50 minutes in a men's soccer game at Missouri St. Louis Sunday afternoon. As both visiting UW-Parkside and the homestanding Tritons went down the stretch, five goals were scored, three on penalty kicks.
UMSL took the last of those three penalty kicks, 1:40 into overtime, and squeaked by the Rangers, 3-2. It was Parkside's first loss of the season and is now 5-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Tritons are 1-1-2 overall and 1-0-2 in league play.
UMSL scored the first goal of the game in the same manner it scored the game-winner...on a penalty kick. The initial PK was at 50:42.
The Rangers took advantage of a penalty kick of their own at 75:42.
Niklas Boedts scored his third of the season to even the score.
Parkside charged to a 2-1 lead when
Johnson Thao pumped in his fourth goal of the year with help from Boedts at 79:29.
With only 1:02 left in regulation, the Tritons tied the game on a goal off of a rebound.
The Rangers had the better of the play on Triton turf. The team put 14 shots on goal compared to seven for UMSL. The visitors had 22 shot attempts to just 12 for the Tritons.
