It was the third game of the season in 5 days for the UW-Parkside men's soccer team. The result stayed the same, this time a 4-1 win over Robert Morris (Chicago). The non-conference match was contested at UW-Parkside's Wood Road Field in front of 317 fans Monday afternoon.
The win moves UW-Parkside's record to an unblemished 3-0. The Eagles lost their third in a row and slipped to 1-3.
It took over 26 minutes for a score to be had. At 26:47, Jose Alfaro found the back of the net, beating Eagle netminder Jose Cornejo to the far post. The goal was unassisted.
The score remainded 1-0 at halftime, before the Rangers opened a comfortable margin in the second stanza.
"We had key contributions from some of our players off the bench, especially Alex Beal and Andrew Krenzien," said Ranger associate head coach Jason Zitzke.
In the second half, the Rangers scored the first three goals. Niklas Boedts notched a goal in front of the net assisted by Spencer Bursten at 52:34. Moments later, at 58:29, speedy Cyril Simmons scored with help from Jason Moxley and Jon Bebeau.
Bursten notched the final Ranger marker at 74:40. Kinkade Lo set him free with an assist.
Robert Morris broke the shutout with just 30 seconds left in the game. Eric Herrera foiled Jamie Lieberman's shutout bid.
"That never should have happened," said Zitzke. "I was disappointed with that because it showed a complete lack of focus on our part. We have to clean that up before we open conference play Friday."
The Rangers put 15 shots on goal, compared to five by the Eagles.
UW-Parkside will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday, Sept. 4, vs. Missouri S&T. The match will be played at Wood Road Field, kicking off at 3:30 p.m.
"Because of the way the schedule has worked, we haven't had a full team, hard practice in 13 days," noted UW-Parkside head coach Rick Kilps. "We'll go easy again tomorrow and then have a hard training day on Wednesday."
"The competition has gotten tougher in each of our three games," added Zitzke. "Missouri S&T will continue that trend. I expect them to be strong."
