Softball sweeps away Cougars

The Ranger softball team scored a sweep on Chicago's southwest side late Thursday afternoon. UW-Parkside took on host St. Xavier, a traditional NAIA power, and posted a 4-3, 8-2 sweep.

The twin wins lifts the Ranger record to 17-15. St. Xavier slipped to 21-16.

In Game 1, Kallie Walczak picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Mandi Andrews. Walczak worked the final three-and-two-thirds innings, giving up just one earned run. She fanned four and walked one.

The Rangers scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull out the game. Lisa Casey led off the sixth inning with a home run to start the uprising. Alea McNellis singled in pinch runner Nicki Ekstrom for the rame's second run. in the seventh, Amanda Miller walked and scored.

In Game 2, UW-Parkside scored in five of the seven innings, putting crooked numbers up twice. Amy Horn jacked a home run in a 17-hit Ranger attack. Christine Holthus, Lisa Casey and Miller, the two, three and four hitters, each had the hat trick in hits.

Lanaya Gutowski was the starting and winning pitcher. She gave up two earned runs in four innings.

The Rangers will be on the road this weekend with Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheaders at Bellarmine Saturday and Northern Kentucky Sunday.
