Rangers win double-overtime thriller

Box Score

There have been plenty of wins this year, 14 in all. One was against the nation's No. 2 ranked team. But, none was more exciting than the 90-87 double overtime game at Bellarmine Thursday night.

The UW-Parkside women's basketball team led, 9-6 early, but the Knights quickly erased that lead. It would be over 40 minutes before the Rangers led again.

Bellarmine led by 11 points at 41-30, late in the first half. The score stood at 41-32 at halftime.

The Knights still led by eight with less than 3 minutes left in the game. Then, the fun began.

Brittany Hogen made a pair of free throws to cut it to six. A layup by Jadee Rooney whittled the gap to four. With an even minute to go, Rooney knocked down a three-point shot to cut the score to 65-64.

After a couple of free throws by Bellarmine's Shawna Nicols with 12 seconds left, the Rangers had one last chance to tie and send the game into overtime. Rooney obliged, by draining another three-point shot and the game was deadlocked at 67-67 at the end of regulation.

The first overtime saw Bellarmine play from the lead. The team led by as many as four with just 1:38 to go. Again, the Rangers clawed their way back. Amy Selk came off the bench to knock down a jumper. Hogen got into the act with a shot underneath to put the Rangers up 77-75 with 24 ticks left.

Nicols made two more free throws to tie the game with 14 seconds remaining. Rooney had a shot at the buzzer barely roll out and we were headed for another 5-minute period.

The second overtime saw the Rangers lead from start to finish. The team was a perfect 7-7 in the session at the free throw line. Selk was 3-3 and added a field goal to boot.

The Rangers were up by five as time wound down. Kylie Brady of Bellarmine scored an uncontested layup as time expired.

UW-Parkside won despite having four starters foul out of the game. The one starter who didn't foul out, Jen Moran, played over 10 minutes with four fouls.

Rooney scored a career high 27 points. Hogen had a career high of 24.

The win allowed the Rangers to stay tied atop the Eastern Division standings of the Great Lakes Valley Conference with Northern Kentucky at 10-2. The Rangers are 14-7 overall and will play at Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday at 1 p.m.
