LaVontay Fenderson tied Andy Schmidtmann in the UW-Parkside recordbook, scoring 52 points against Saint Joseph's in the DeSimone Gymnasium Thursday night, but the Rangers came up a bucket short.
A Ranger turnover with 6 seconds left was costly. A free throw by Phillip Collins gave the Pumas an 84-82 lead. A long three-ball by Fenderson was off the mark in the Rangers' final possession preserving the 84-82 final.
Fenderson shot 17-31 from the floor, 3-5 from behind the arc and 15-19 from the free throw line. He pulled down four rebounds and had four assists.
The score was deadlocked at 39-39 at halftime. The Rangers went on an 8-0 run to start the second half only to have the Pumas answer with a 9-0 run.
The last Ranger lead was 81-80 with 32 seconds left. A dunk by Collins put the Pumas up for good. Collins led the Pumas in scoring with 24 points.
Saint Joseph's is 13-10 overall and 6-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UW-Parkside is 6-17 overall and 2-12 in league play.
