UMSL unbeaten no more...thanks to Rangers

Neither team led by more than six points, that is until UW-Parkside pulled away from Missouri-St. Louis late in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men's basketball game. The Rangers handed UMSL its first loss of the season in seven outings as they earned a solid 74-65 victory. in the DeSimone Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

UW-Parkside leveled its overall and league record, 4-4, 1-1. The Tritons tripped to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

"I can't wait to get back into practice with these guys," said an excited UW-Parkside head coach Luke Reigel on the Coin's Sports Bar post-game show. "They're getting better all the time and they work hard. It showed today."

After falling behind 11-5, Parkside went on a 9-0 run. The teams traded hoops throughout the remainder of the first half which the Rangers ended up on top, 40-35.

UMSL held a brief leads mid-way through the first half, but the resilient Rangers changed their fortunes. 

Grant Johnson knocked down a baseline jumper with 4:35 to go to give UWP a two possession lead at 63-59.  The Tritons tied it up at 63-63 on back-to-back backcourt turnovers.

Parkside then re-established itself and sealed the win. 

Jeremy Saffold hit a clutch three-pointer to put Parkside back on top, 66-63, with 3 minutes left. Johnson canned a jumper to lead by five with 2:24 left. 

UMSL then had to play chase and foul.

Ryan Callozzo hit a pair at the stripe to extend the gap to 71-65 with 54 seconds left. The Rangers dug in and played tight defense to keep their guests off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Saffold led all scorers 24 points. Johnson and Sam Katula added 13 points each. Callozzo joined the double digit scorers with 12.

The Rangers shot 54 percent from the floor for the game.

UWP will host non-conference foe Clark College Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7:00 p.m. General admission seats are just $7 for adults; $3 for high school students and $1 for children age 14 and under. UW-Parkside students are admitted free of charge by showing a Ranger Card.
