UWP plays well early, but bows to Rockhurst

The UW-Parkside men's basketball team led for much of the first half and held a 10-point lead at 35-25 with 2 minutes to go in the first half. Rockhurst pulled to within 36-30 at halftime and then took over in the second half as the Hawks posted a 73-62 win over the Rangers in the DeSimone Gymnasium Thursday night.

The game was the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.

"We could have won this game," said UW-Parkside head coach Luke Reigel on the Coin's Sports Bar post-game show on WRJN. "We have to get better on Saturday."

The Rangers will host Missouri-St. Louis Saturday, Dec. 5, at 3:00 p.m.

Grant Johnson poured in 20 points for Parkside. Teammate Jeremy Saffold added 19.

Rockhurst held Parkside off the scoreboard for the first 5 minutes of the second half, allowing the Hawks to take a 37-36 lead. After a 41-41 tie, Rockhurst pulled away.

With the score at 67-57, Rockhurst, the Rangers made a final push, going on a modest 5-0 run to pull withing 67-62 with 1:33 to go in the game. UWP ran out of time as the Hawks made their free throws and sealed the game.

Shooting percentages were fairly even with the Hawks at 43 percent and the Rangers at 41. Rebounding was tight as well with the Hawks owning a 39-38 edge.

Aaron Hill, last year's Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year, led the Hawks with 20 points.
