Gutty Rangers beat Beavers

Shorthanded. Two injured early. Despite the multitude of adversity, the UW-Parkside men's basketball team perservered in beating Bemidji State, 78-65. It was the second win in as many tries for the Rangers in the Slam Dunk Diabetes Classic held at the DeSimone Gymnasium.

Kevin Senechalle scored the first points of a game on a fast-break layup, but went down with an injury. He would later return. 

Dwayne Edwards was also banged up in the first half. He did not return.

The Beavers broke slightly away from a see-saw battle early and grabbed its biggest lead, only six, 7 minutes into the game. The Rangers rallied to a 38-33 lead at halftime.

Grant Johnson scored on the baseline to bump the lead to 66-59 with 2:32 to go in the game. After forcing a Bemidji turnover, Zach Blesich showed great recognition by finding a cutting Johnson underneath for a 68-59 advantage with 2 minutes left to play. Another defensive stand and score by the Rangers was all she wrote for the Beavers.

Johnson led the Rangers in scoring with 21 points. Jeremy Saffold was 5-10 from the floor and tallied 17 points. Senechalle added 11 to the winning cause.

The Rangers are now 3-3 and will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. Rockhurst will visit the DeSimone Gymnasium for the league opener.
