UWP controls play; ties St. Joe's

Jon Bebeau helped set up the Ranger goal

Box Score

Nothing was settled in 110 minutes of soccer at UW-Parkside's Wood Road Field on a blustery Sunday afternoon. The Ranger men's squad and St. Joseph's battled to a 1-1 stalemate.

“This tie feels like a loss,” admitted UW-Parkside head coach Rick Kilps. “Our guys are extremely disappointed, as you would expect the to be.”

The Rangers controlled the tempo and held a large advantage from a possession point of view. The home club had 19 shot attempts contrasted with nine for the Pumas.

Johnson Thao scored for the Rangers at 14:47 with a double assist from Jon Bebeau and Niklas Boedts. It was Thao's seventh goal of the season, which was set up in front and beat Puma netminder Alex Makin.

Saint Joseph countered with a goal at 79:25 when Chad Stuecher scored from Torrey Brock and Greg Gehring, the latter of which leads the Great Lakes Valley Conference in goals scored with 11. The goal came off of a scramble in front.

“Our defense did a nice job of shutting him (Gehring) down all afternoon,” cited Kilps. “It was unfortunate we gave up the goal we did. It wasn't a strong goal and we need to eliminate giving up those silly goals.”

The Rangers put four shots on goal. St. Joseph's had three shots on Ranger goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman. Each team hit a cross bar in the second half.

“We created opportunities, but didn't finish,” said Kilps. “We were our own worst enemy.”

The Rangers, ranked No. 23 in the nation, are now 9-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, which places them in fifth in the 15-team circuit. The Pumas are 5-5-2 overall and 3-4-2 in league play.

The Rangers will take to the road to battle non-conference foe Harris-Stowe in St. Louis, Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. The team returns to conference play at Lewis Sunday, Oct. 11, at 2:30 p.m.

The next home match is Friday, Oct. 23, versus Rockhurst at 3:30 p.m.
