The Lewis volleyball team came into the DeSimone Gymnasium ranked No. 13 in the country and riding the crest of a 21-match winning streak. But, what the Flyers got in front of a fired up Ranger crowd was far from conventional.
In an exciting five-set match, Lewis was on match point three different times. The Rangers were on match point once. In the end, it was the Flyers who pulled out a 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 13-25, 18-16, victory, extending their winning streak to 22.
Lewis left with a 25-3 record and a perfect 11-0 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Confernece, a league whose championship it has won in each of the last three years.
UW-Parkside is now 20-10 overall and 4-7 in league play.
Lewis ranced to a 6-3 lead in the fifth and deciding set. The Rangers caught their guests at 8-8. The lead see-sawed and was tied at 14-14. Parkside went on match point at 15-14 on a Flyer attacking error, but the group in red knotted the score at 15.
This time Lewis forged ahead, only to see the Rangers knot the score, 16-16. A Lewis kill and a Ranger attack error gave the Flyers the 18-16 win and the match victory. Lewis hit at a .257 clip in the fifth set, while UWP was at .148.
Parkside hit for a .250 percentage in the match. Lewis hit at .189.
Tami Gleason and Addie Kramer each had 13 kills for the Rangers. Caroline Langer had the hat trick in serving aces.
The Rangers will travel to St. Louis to take on Maryville in its next match on Saturday.
