Tough five-set loss ends trip

The UW-Parkside women's volleyball team had a pair of Kentucky schools on the schedule over the weekend with matches at Northern Kentucky Friday and at Bellarmine Saturday.

The initial match saw an always strong Northern Kentucky squad take the Rangers in three, 25-17, 25-15, 25-15, in a 58-minute match. In Saturday's match in Louisville, UWP dropped a hard-fought five-set marathon match to Bellarmine, 25-13, 21-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-10.

The Rangers were limited to a hitting percentage of .021 at Northern Kentucky, while the Norse hit for a .258 percentage. Kim Nemcek was a big hitter for NKU with 16 kills in 28 attempts with only two errors for an even .500 percentage.

Cassie Wilkens was Parkside's best at the net with 11 kills and a .222 hitting percentage.

At Bellarmine, the Rangers rallied to win the fourth set and send the match to a fifth and deciding game. The score was tied at 7-7 when the Knights broke free. They led, 12-10, before going on to score the last three points and close out the match.

The tough tandem at the net of Whitney Thormoehlen (22 kills) and Emily Beckman (19 kills) combined for a staggerting 41 kills for Bellarmine. UW-Parkside's Addie Kramer was solid with 18 kills and a .455 hitting percentage.

Courtney Stack had 25 assists for the Rangers. Shannon Curtis dug up 16 balls and Tami Gleason notched 10 blocks.

Parkside is now 15-8 overall and 3-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Rangers will take part in the annual GLVC-GLIAC Challenge in Grand Rapids, Michigan, next weekend. The team will play three matches against teams from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The schedule is as follows:

Friday, Oct. 16                                                 Saturday, Oct. 17
vs. Urbana, 1:30 p.m.                                    vs. Tiffin, 10:00 a.m.
                                                                           vs. Findlay, 3:00 p.m.

The next home match is Friday, Oct. 23, versus Kentucky Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
