It wasn't a comfortable situation for the Ranger women's basketball team playing at winless Saint Joseph's College Saturday afternoon. The homestanding Pumas gave UW-Parkside all it could handle, but the end result was a 57-52 verdict in favor of the Rangers.
The Great Lakes Valley Conference clash was contested in the Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse in Rensselaer, Indiana.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, which ended with a 29-28 Ranger lead.
UW-Parkside led, 39-33 with 14 minutes to go in the game, when the Pumas went on a 11-4 run to grab a 44-43 advantage. Jadee Rooney countered for the visitors on the next possession, knocking down a three-ball, to give the Rangers a lead they would never relinquish.
There were some tense moments late. A three-pointer by Puma Michelle Kiger pulled her team to within one at 53-52. Amanda Gibson and #Kaitlyn Bettiga each were 2-2 at the free throw line in the final half-minute to ice the game.
UW-Parkside jumped to 12-6 overall including an impressive 8-1 record in the GLVC. The team vaulted into a tie for first place in the Eastern Division as the nation's No. 1 ranked team, Northern Kentucky, suffered its first loss of the year, bowing to Quincy, 66-57. Freshman Brittany Beyer was a force for the Rangers underneath. She poured in a game-high 22 points. She pulled down seven rebounds, five on the offensive end of the floor.
Kiger led the 0-18 Pumas with 17 points. The team is now 0-10 in the GLVC.
UW-Parkside will host Indianapolis Thursday, Jan. 29, at 5:30 p.m.
