The end of the first half and the beginning of the second half spelled doom for the UW-Parkside women's basketball team. The Rangers saw their season come to an end in Springfield, Missouri, Tuesday night. Homestanding Drury won the Great Lakes Valley Conference quarterfinal game, 70-54.
The Rangers went on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 23-23, silencing what was a vocal crowd of 1,356. The Panthers went on an 8-0 run in the final 1:40 of the first half in taking a momentum-stealing 31-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. The back-breaker was a three-point shot at the buzzer by Lindsey Ballweg.
The Panthers parlayed their momentum into the second half, scoring the first 12 points. A lay-in by Chelsey Schadler ended the 20-0 Drury run.
Drury's lead swelled to its largest margin of 23 points at 48-25 with 13:32 to go in the game. The Rangers battled back, going on a 14-4 run in cutting the margin to 13 points. That was the last gasp for the Rangers as the Panthers put the game away, advancing to the league's semifinals.
Kayla Ming scored 19 points in her final collegiate game in leading all scorers. She was 5-10 from the floor, 2-4 from behind the arc and 7-8 at the free throw line. Schadler, who had a career-high of 29 points and 10 rebounds at Drury back on December 1, tallied 15 points in this contest.
A big key in the game was Drury's ability to get second and third shots. The Panthers pulled down 21 offensive rebounds, which was exactly as many as the Rangers had on both ends of the floor. Drury out-boarded the Rangers, 36-21, overall.
UW-Parkside out-shot Drury from the floor, connecting on 49 percent of its shots. Drury made good on 46 percent.
Drury, a team which came up with a 15-game winning streak before losing its final game of the regular season, is now 25-3. The team is ranked No. 8 in the country after checking in at No. 5 last week.
The Rangers end the 2007-08 campaign with a 17-11 record. The team tallied two more wins than it did last season.
