Four in double figures in win over Cougars

Four UW-Parkside players finished in double figures in scoring as the Rangers took a 74-63 win over visiting SIU Edwardsville Saturday afternoon. It was the last match-up between the teams as Division II opponents, with SIUE is going NCAA Division I next season.

Allison Smaglik starred in the game for the Rangers. She took advantage of a rare start to notch a double-double, with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Nicole Watzlawick also pulled down 13 rebounds for the victors.

The Rangers jumped to a 15-5 lead in the first 5 minutes of the game. The biggest lead was 12 at 34-22. The Cougars then went on a 10-0 run before halftime, leaving the score at 34-32 at intermission.

UW-Parkside re-extended its lead to double figures with 5:11 to play. The Rangers had a 67-57 lead at that juncture. The team was 4-4 at the free throw line in the final 46 seconds, not allowing the Cougars to get back in the game.

Kayla Ming notched 16 of her 18 points in the first half. Other double digit scorers were Amanda Gibson with 16 points and Chelsey Schadler with a dozen.

Amber Shelton paced the Cougars with 22 points.

SIU Edwardsville was limited to 37 percent shooting from the floor. The Rangers knocked down 44 percent of their shots.

Each team took care of the ball with only 17 total turnovers in the game, nine on the part of UW-Parkside.

Next up for the Rangers (14-7, 8-5 GLVC) is a game at Lewis Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 5:30 p.m.
