Lewis University got off to a blistering start in a women's basketball game played in the Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Illinois, Tuesday night. The Flyers flew to a 22-point lead 15 minutes into the contest. The Rangers pulled to within three, but fell short of coming all the way back, losing 74-66.
Lewis, which shot 67 percent from the floor, raced to the lead. The Flyers grabbed their first double digit lead at 15-4, less than 6 minutes into the contest. The 22-point buldge came on three different ocassions, the last of which was at 43-21 with 2:24 to go before halftime.
The score stood at 45-27 at halftime.
Coming out of the lockerroom, the Rangers mounted their comeback. A 13-4 run in the first 4:30 pulled UW-Parkside to within 49-40. Lewis pushed the lead back up to 17 points a few minutes later, before the resiliant Rangers charged back again.
With the score standing at 66-55 with 6:30 left in the game, the Rangers made their move. A layup by Allison Smaglik, another inside shot by Denise Mannella, followed by a pair of field goals by Smaglik whittled the lead to just three at 66-63 with 2:26 remaining.
A pair of jump shots knocked down by Lewis gave the team a cushion, forcing the Rangers to foul. Jenna Mooberry made good on all six of her free throws in the final 46 seconds, helping the Flyers hold off their guests.
Smaglik led all scorers with 16 points. Three Lewis players and Ranger Amanda Gibson scored 15 points in the contest.
The Flyers held a decided edge on the boards, 34-23.
The win levels the Flyer record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at 7-7, to go with an 11-10 overall record. The Rangers fell to 14-8 overall and 8-6 in the GLVC.
UW-Parkside will host Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday, Feb. 14, at 5:30 p.m.
