Early deficit too much to overcome

Hot shooting Bellarmine put up 20 points in the first 6 minutes, taking an 11-point lead over the Rangers early. UW-Parkside worked its way back in taking a 54-52 lead with 5:30 to go in the game, before succumbing to the Knights, 77-68. The Great Lakes Valley Conference women's basketball game was played in Louisville, Kentucky, Thursday night.

The game was knotted at 56-56 with 4 minutes left to play. Bellarmine went on a 7-0 run, forcing the Rangers to foul in the late stages. The Knights scored 13 points at the free throw line in the final 4 minutes, icing the game.

The win moves Bellarmine to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the GLVC. UW-Parkside, ranked No. 7 in the Great Lakes Region, dropped to 12-6 overall and 6-4 in league play.

Katie Willinger was a thorn in the side of the Rangers. She made good on nine of 11 shots from the floor en route to a game-high 24 points. She narrowly missed a double-double, pulling down a game-high nine rebounds.

Leading the way for the Rangers was Mackenzie Heise with 17 points. Amanda Gibson checked in with 15 points and Kayla Ming added 14, but was limited to just two points in the second half.

Bellarmine shot 51 percent for the game and out-rebounded the Rangers, 38-31. UW-Parkside connected on 42 percent of its shots from the floor. The Knights were 22-33 at the free throw line, while the Rangers were 6-9, with all attempts coming in the second half.
