UW-P tangles with nation's No. 7 in opener; then challenges 4-0 team

The Ranger women's basketball squad opened the regular season in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on the campus of Lake Superior State Saturday night. The team stood up to Michigan Tech, ranked No. 7 in the country, in their first game of the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge. Then had to face Lake Superior State, which came into the game 4-0, on their home floor.

The Huskies withstood the Rangers and pulled out an 68-56 victory.

UW-Parkside trailed the powerhouse by seven points on three different occasions in the first half. The Rangers battled back, capturing a 31-28 lead after a couple of free throws from Amanda Gibson 5 minutes into the second half.

In the next 10 minutes, Tech surged to an 11-point lead at 53-42. The Huskies made good on 10 of 10 from the free throw line in the last 3:13 to thwart the upset bid.

Gibson led a trio of Rangers in double digit scoring with 18 points. True freshman Jadee Rooney added 13 points and veteran Denise Mannella had a dozen points to go with nine rebounds.

Tech had 13 more points at the charity stripe with a 25-29 effort, compared to 12 of 15 for Parkside.

Versus Lake Superior State     Box Score

UW-Parkside led, 13-7 after 7 minutes of play versus the Lakers at Lake Superior State Sunday afternoon, but witnessed the home team go on a 17-3 run to take command of the game en route to a 77-56 victory.

The score was 38-26 in favor of LSSU at halftime. The Lakers pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 28 with 3:30 to go in the game.

The win boosted the Lakers to a 5-0 record and left the Rangers at 0-2.

Gibson led all scorers at the half with 14 points, but was held off the scoreboard in the second half before fouling out. Brittany Beyer chipped in 12 points to the Parkside cause and Mannella added 10.

Lake Superior State shot 53 percent from the floor and was 8-17 from behind the three-point arc.

Next up for the Rangers is another non-conference game, versus Robert Morris College at Loyola University in Chicago Friday, Nov. 21.
