It didn't look good early for the UW-Parkside men's basketball team. Visiting Saint Joseph's College scored the first seven points of the game and nine of the first ten. The end result, however, was far different as the Rangers pounced on the Pumas, 81-67.
The game was played at UW-Parkside's DeSimone Gymnasium in front of 1,012 fans Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers survived despite a near 6-minute drought in which they failed to score a point. This happened in the late stages of the first half. The home team clung to a 34-32 lead at intermission.
The led buldged to double digits at 61-50 with 8:12 to go in the game. The Rangers gradually extended their lead. They led by as many as 19 point at one stage.
The Pumas did force a tie at the 12:07 mark of the second half. The game was deadlocked at 46-46 after a pair of free throws by Ronald Coleman. On the next possession LaVontay Fenderson drained a three-ball for the Rangers, giving the team the lead for good.
Fenderson was the game's leading scorer with 25 points. Tyrone Deacon tallied a season-high 24 points.
The Rangers shot 49 percent for the game. St. Joseph's owned the boards, out-rebounding the Rangers, 43-28.
