The UW-Parkside women's basketball team treated an Alumni Day crowd to a 74-66 overtime victory at the DeSimone Gymnasium. The hotly contested game saw its biggest margin for either side of the final gap of eight points.
The win was crucial in the standings of the Eastern Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rangers and Flyers were knotted in the standings at 5-3; however, the Rangers now are one up on their rivals to the south.
Denise Mannella and Amanda Gibson starred in the game for UW-Parkside. Mannella notched a double-double with a career-high 18 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds. Gibson, the floor general, was a perfect 10-10 at the free throw line as part of a 21-point output. Gibson was 5-5 at the stripe in the last 35 seconds of overtime to salt the game away for UW-Parkside.
Kayla Ming was one point better than her scoring average, pouring in 21 points. Ming was five of seven from beyond the three-point arc.
The Rangers had the last possession of regulation. Mackenzie Heise took a 12-foot baseline jumper as the final seconds ticked off the clock; however the attempt was blocked Jenny Turpel.
In overtime, the Rangers got on the board first on a layup by Mannella, 90 seconds into the extra session. The game saw its 11th tie before the Flyers put the league's best freee throw shooting team at the line. Gibson was 7-7 at the line in the extra session.
The thrilling victory by the home team upped its record to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lewis fell to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in league play.
