UW-Parkside trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, gained the lead by halftime, and then held off Missouri-St. Louis, 76-72. The Great Lakes Valley contest was held at UW-Parkside's DeSimone Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers' exceptional free throw shooting continued and was key to the win. UW-Parkside knocked down 29 of its 36 attempts. Kayla Ming was 10-10 at the free throw line which boosted her 24 game-high points. Three other Rangers dented double digits. Amanda Gibson scored 15 points, Mackenzie Heise chipped in 13 and Denise Mannella added 12.
Missouri-St. Louis held the advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Rangers 30-25.
The Tritons led, 32-21 with 7:20 to go in the first half. The Rangers whittled the gap to one at 37-36 at halftime.
The Rangers took the lead for good 5 minutes into the second half. A 14-0 run pushed the lead to 55-40 at its largest margin.
Missouri-St. Louis forged their way back to within 74-72 with 18 second to play. A pair of foul shots by Gibson provided the final margiin.
As a team, the Rangers shot 54 percent from the floor. UMSL shot at a 44 percent clip.
UW-Parkside elevated its record to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the GLVC. Missouri-St. Louis is now 4-10 overall and 2-5 in league play.
The Rangers will not be in action again until Saturday, Jan. 26. Lewis will visit the DeSimone Gymnasium for a 1 p.m. game.
