A total of 18 of the 30 UW-P halftime points were registered by Rangers reserves, sparking the UW-Parkside women's basketball team to a 70-63 win at Southern Indiana Thursday night. The win lofts the Ranger record to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
With point-guard Amanda Gibson and leading scorer Kayla Ming on the bench with two fouls each, the Rangers flexed their depth. Trailing by as many as 14 points at 26-12 with 6 minutes to go in the first half, the visitors went to work. Consecutive three-point baskets by Allison Smaglik on back-to-back possessions, forged the Rangers a little closer.
The Rangers went on a 14-0 run and caught the Screaming Eagles at 26-26 at the 3-minute mark. Southern Indiana led, 32-30, at halftime.
UW-Parkside grabbed the lead for good in the early stages of the second half. A three-pointer by Ming put the Rangers on top 36-34. The shot was significant because Ming, who averages 18 points per game, was held off the scoresheet in the first half. Still, she netted a game-high 19 points in the contest.
The lead grew to as great as 10 points at 54-44 on yet another three-ball by Ming, this one with 7:50 to go in the game. The Screaming Eagles made a late charge, whittling the gap to four at 62-58 with 1:26 to go, but the Rangers countered with a layup by Denise Mannella on their next possession.
The league's top free throw shooting team then put the game away at the charity stripe.
Chelsey Schadler had 13 points for the Rangers and made it to the line 11 times, making good on nine shots. Jen Moran came off the bench to score all 10 of her points in the first half and teammate Mackenzie Heise also tallied 10.
The Eagles out-rebounded the Rangers, 35-31.
UW-Parkside shot 43 percent from the floor and was 20-26 at the free throw line.
The road trip continues with a game at Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m.
