Varns' goal enough for Rangers

Freshman Ashley Varns (Chatham, Ill.)  picked a good time to score her first collegiate goal Sunday afternoon because it turned out to be the only tally of the game. The UW-Parkside forward found the back of the net at 30:50, helping the Rangers to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over St. Joseph's. The Great Lakes Valley Conference match was played at UW-Parkside's Wood Road Field.

Varns' goal was assisted by Kelsey Johnson (Kenosha, Wis.) and Meredith Novak (Batavia, Ill.)

"We were solid defensively," cited UW-Parkside head coach Troy Fabiano. "We won a lot of 50-50 balls."

Ranger goalkeeper Erica Higuchi (Norcross, Geo.) needed to make only one save, which came in the first half. It was Higuchi's fifth shutout of the season and the sixth by the Rangers. UW-Parkside now has an 0.91 goals against average. Higuchi's goals against average is 0.95. Fabiano singled out the play of Brittany Kaim, who was a solid contributor on Sunday.

"We created a lot of chances, but only put the ball in the net once,' said Fabiano. "Still, the players showed a lot of character coming out and winning after losing two games on the road the previous weekend."

UW-Parkside is now 7-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the GLVC. The team is undefeated at home with a 4-0-1 mark.

St. Joseph's slid to 5-5-2 overall and 3-2-2 in league play.

The Rangers will next play at Southern Indiana Friday, Oct. 5, starting at 5 p.m.
