The Ranger women's soccer team ended a modest two-game skid with a 2-0 win over visiting Indianapolis at Wood Road Field Friday afternoon. The win lifted UW-Parkside to 6-3-1 overall and evened its Great Lakes Valley Conference record at 3-3-1. Indianapolis fell to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Meredith Novak (Batavia, Ill.) scored what turned out to be the game-winner at 17:25. She put the ball in play with a corner kick, had the ball deflect back to her after a fray in front of the net, and buried a shot from a tough angle. The Rangers added an insurance goal at 37:03 when Kelly Teeters (Hubertus, Wis.) tallied with assists from Novak and Sam Leick (Kenosha, Wis.).
"It was a game we had to have," said UW-Parkside head coach Troy Fabiano.
The coach credited goalkeeper Erica Higuchi (Norcross, Geo.) for coming up with a pair of big saves early. Higuchi turned away four shots on goal in preserving the shutout.
"In the second half, we maintained possession," explained Fabiano. "As a unit, we defended well and had the better of the play."
UW-Parkside will host Saint Joseph's Sunday, Sept. 30, beginning at noon.
