UW-P pulls out another close one

Bojan Jovicic

It was a successful weekend for the UW-Parkside men's soccer team and a badly need one. After starting off 0-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, the Rangers have pulled back to even in league play, to go with their 6-2 overall mark.

The Rangers topped visiting Missouri-St. Louis, 1-0, on Sunday at Wood Road Field.

Just as he did on Friday in a 1-0 double overtime win over Missouri-Rolla, Bojan Jovicic (Milwaukee, Wis.) notched the game-winner on a penalty kick. This time it was in regulation play at 55:20. Jovicic was taken down while making a move to the net, creating the penalty shot.

"I don't care how we score as long as we win," said UW-Parkside head coach Rick Kilps. "On Friday, we faced a team which stacked their defense and we could not penetrate, but today we changed our game plan and got behind the defense."

UW-Parkside fired 18 shots in the contest, nine of which were on goal. Jovicic had 10 shot attempts himself, half of which required a save.

"There was an improvement from Friday in our energy, level of urgency and getting forward," noted Kilps. "There was some space for us to exploit out there today."

Ranger goalkeeper Victor Perez (Kenosha, Wis.) was credited with the shutout. He tended the net for all 90 minutes, making three saves. He and fellow goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman (Racine, Wis.) have backstopped the Rangers to a 0.49 goals against average so far this season.

"Getting wins in this league takes a lot of work," said Kilps. "There are a lot of good teams in the league. There has been a lot of solid defensive play which accounts for the low scores."

"I was proud of our perseverance. We didn't give in," added UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke.

The Rangers will hit the road for a weekend set. The team will travel to SIU Edwardsville for a 7:30 p.m. match Friday, Sept. 21. The road trip continues at Quincy, Sunday, Sept. 23, with a 2:30 p.m. start time.
