Early Drury run foils Ranger upset bid

The UW-Parkside women's basketball team took a 6-0 lead at Drury, silencing a crowd of 1,322 at the Weiser Gym Saturday afternoon. It took the homestanding Panthers, ranked No. 6 in the country, a full 3 minutes to score. Once they broke the ice, they went on a 24-4 run and captured an 82-68 win over the Rangers.

The win moves Drury to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UW-Parkside is now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Drury led, 41-28, at halftime. The Rangers kept battling and cut the lead down to seven at 47-40 with 15 minutes to go on a three-pointer by Amanda Gibson (Boulder Junction, Wis.). After a missed Panther lay-up, Chelsey Schadler (Mazomanie, Wis.)knocked down a jump shot and the Rangers forged even closer at 47-42. From there, Drury went on a 12-0 run to put the game away.

Schadler scored a career high 29 points to go with a career-high 10 rebounds. She was 9-12 from the floor including a 5-6 effort from behind the three-point arc. Schadler added a pair of assists to her stat line.

"Chelsey played a good game, commented UW-Parkside head coach Jenny Kenesie. "She played well in defensive situations as well."

Drury shot an even 50 percent from the floor for the game, while UW-Parkside shot 38 percent. The Rangers were plagued with turnovers, with 20.

UW-Parkside will now have six consecutive home games beginning with Robert Morris, Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. That game can be heard live on www.gatewaysportsweb.org.
