The Ranger women's basketball team opened the 2007-08 on a high note, knocking off Michigan Tech, 75-69, in the DeSimone Gymnasium Friday night. The game was part of the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge, hosted by UW-Parkside.
Sophomore point guard Amanda Gibson (Boulder Junction, Wis.) spearheaded the win for the Rangers. She scored 16 points to go with 10 rebounds and 9 assists in 29 minutes of play. Teammate Kayla Ming (Grayslake, Ill.) led all scorers with 17 points. Mackenzie Heise found double digits in scoring with 13.
Katie Wysocky and Danae Danen paced the Huskies with 16 points apiece.
UW-Parkside held a 36-31 lead at intermission, leading for most of the half. The Rangers led by as many as seven in the second half, before forging to a 52-52 tie with 9:47 to go in the game. The lead see-sawed back in forth for the next several minutes. The game was tied later, at 67-67, with 1:45 to go before the Rangers pulled away. A three-point shot in the deep left corner by Allison Smaglik (Stevens Point, Wis.) allowed the Rangers to play from the lead.
UW-Parkside shot 48 percent from the floor for the contest, while Michigan Tech made good on 45 percent of its shots.
The Rangers had a decided edge on the boards, out-rebounding the Huskies, 38-27.
UW-Parkside will be back in action Saturday, hosting Lake Superior State at 5:30 p.m.
