The UW-Parkside women's soccer team got a final tune-up before the coming Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. The Rangers defeated visiting Ferris State, 3-0, at Wood Road Field Sunday afternoon in a non-conference clash.
The win lifted the Rangers' overall record to 11-5-1 including a 7-0-1 record at home. The Bulldogs dropped to 6-9.
"After a poor result at Lewis on Friday (a 1-0 loss), it was going to be interesting to see how we reacted," said UW-Parkside head coach Troy Fabiano.
UW-Parkside scored just 16 seconds into the game. Megan Anderson (Hudson, Wis.) scored from close range after the ball pinballed through the goal mouth. Freshman Sam Leick (Kenosha, Wis.) assisted on what turned out to be the game-winner.
Leick notched a goal of her own, the first in her career, a little later at 17:43. Her tally was assisted by Meredith Novak (Batavia, Ill.), who leads the Rangers in total points with 18.
The score remained 2-0 at halftime.
Becky Zirlin (Skokie, Ill.) scored her third goal of the season to add insurance at 77:58. The shot came from long distance, outside the box.
"It was important that we get back on track heading into the playoffs," said Fabiano. "It was a good way to close out our home season."
The Rangers will play at Drury in a GLVC quarterfinal game Sunday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m.
