Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Parkside opens season with strong 4-1 triumph over Winona State

WINONA, Minn, – The Parkside women's soccer team secured a decisive 4-1 victory over Winona State University (0-1-0) on Thursday at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium. This victory snapped a 2-game losing streak in the all-time series against Winona State, marking Parkside's first win against them in four years, with their last victory coming on September 4th, 2022. Additionally, it was the first time Parkside has defeated Winona State in Winona since September 3rd, 2021. The Rangers dominated with 11 shots on goal, leading to four goals in the match.

The first half commenced with the Rangers applying offensive pressure on the Warriors, logging several shots early in the match. Parkside's persistence paid off in the 33rd minute when Mary Leininger, making a remarkable collegiate debut, scored with an assist from Ella McDonnell, giving them a 1-0 lead. Leininger's first goal came off a rebound from McDonnell's shot from the right side. Warrior goalie Abigail Rounds knocked it down, but the ball found the foot of Leininger, and she struck it home for the Rangers' first goal of the season and her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate game.

Leininger struck again in the 45th minute, doubling the lead to 2-0 just before the end of the half. Her second goal came from streaming her way inside the box from the left side and slipping the ball into the right corner. The Rangers' defense held firm, preventing any goals from Winona State.

Parkside extended its lead early in the second half with Kate Brown scoring in the 55th minute, making it 3-0. Brown's goal was a long-distance strike from the left that curled perfectly over the reach of a leaping Rounds, right under the bar and in.

Ava Rizzitano added to the visitors' advantage with a goal in the 59th minute. Rizzitano's goal came off a misplay from the defense, and she weaved right around her defender, then left, before hammering it past the keeper.

Winona State responded with a goal in the 80th minute off of a Ranger own goal, narrowing the deficit to 4-1.

Ava Rizzitano scored a goal and led the way with six shots, five of which were on goal. Mary Leininger contributed two goals, including the game-winner, from three shots, all on target. Ella McDonnell provided an assist to add to the team's offensive efforts. Kate Brown found the back of the net once and took two shots, with one being on goal.

The Rangers start their 2026 season 1-0-0. Up next, Parkside will host Lewis University on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. CT for its home opener.
