Parkside Falls 5-4 to Grand Valley to Close Regular Season

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Parkside built an early lead but could not hold off a late rally, falling 5-4 to Grand Valley State on Saturday in GLIAC play.

The Rangers struck first with two runs in the opening inning. Benjamin Loyd singled to start the game, and Dylan Sayles followed with a base hit. Noah Goddard drove in the first run with a double to left, and Jackson Lindquist added an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.

Parkside extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Mason Mitacek and Joe Mrowiec reached on consecutive singles before John St. Clair walked to load the bases. Loyd brought in a run with a groundout for an RBI.

Starting pitcher Nathan Ciemny kept Grand Valley State off the board through five innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. The Lakers broke through in the sixth on a solo home run by Jovan Gill to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Parkside answered in the seventh. Loyd reached base, stole second and later scored on an RBI single from Sayles to extend the lead to 4-1.

Grand Valley State responded with a solo home run from Nick Krstich in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-2, then completed the comeback in the eighth. A sacrifice fly cut the lead to one before Will Bowen delivered a two-run single to center field, giving the Lakers a 5-4 advantage.

Klaus was charged with the loss after allowing the go-ahead runs in the inning.

Parkside threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but could not capitalize.

Loyd and Sayles each finished with two hits to lead the Rangers, while Sayles drove in two runs.

Saturday's contest marked the final regular-season game for Parkside. The Rangers finish the year 24-23 overall with a 10-14 record in GLIAC play.
