Box Score WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – The Parkside baseball team fell to Upper Iowa 11-0 on Saturday evening at West Liberty High School.
Upper Iowa struck early in the bottom of the first inning. Cael Luzum opened the frame with a double before Thane Meiners drew a walk to put two runners on base. Gabe Bombardier followed with a two-run double to give the Peacocks a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, JJ Vargas extended the advantage with a two-run home run to left field to make it 4-0.
The Peacocks added another run in the second inning when Jayce Klug reached base and later scored on a fielding error, pushing the Upper Iowa lead to 5-0.
Parkside created several scoring opportunities throughout the game. In the second inning, Dylan Sayles singled and advanced to third later in the frame before Nathan Hanel reached on an error to put runners on the corners, but the Rangers were unable to bring a run across.
The Rangers threatened again in the third inning when Benjamin Loyd singled and Josh Wicker followed with a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Upper Iowa was able to escape the inning with a pop up to keep Parkside off the scoreboard.
Parkside's best chance came in the fourth inning when the Rangers loaded the bases with two outs. Jackson Lindquist and Carter Storti each worked walks before Nolan Maciejewski drew another walk to fill the bases, but Upper Iowa starter Gabe Olson recorded a strikeout to end the threat.
Upper Iowa broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs. Hunter Jones delivered a two-RBI single before Jayce Klug added a two-run triple down the right field line. Klug later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 10-0.
The Peacocks added one more run in the sixth inning during a bases-loaded sequence to push the score to 11-0.
Benjamin Loyd led the Rangers offensively, collecting two hits including singles in the first and third innings.
On the mound, Nathan Ciemny made the start for Parkside and recorded eight strikeouts over 4.0 innings of work. William Hyland and Braden Sayles combined to finish the game out of the bullpen, with Sayles adding two strikeouts in his two innings of relief.
Parkside finished the game with five hits, while Upper Iowa recorded seven hits in the win.
